Draw first, then write

A drawing gives a young writer something to say. Ask your child to tell you about the picture, then to write one sentence about it.

The prompt is for the grown-up

Read the prompt out loud. It is printed small in a box marked “grown-up reads”, because a beginner cannot read every word in it yet.

Spelling

Let your child write the sounds heard in each word. Spelling by sound is real work for a beginner, and it shows you which sounds are known.
