Scoot game maker

Numbered cards and a matching answer sheet

Make a scoot game. Each numbered card shows a picture to spell or a word to read. Lay one card on each desk. The children move from card to card when you say “scoot” and write each answer beside the same number on the recording sheet. An answer key prints as the last page.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose picture cards or word cards.
  2. Pick a word set or type your own words.
  3. Choose 8, 12 or 16 cards.
  4. Print the cards, cut them apart, and print one recording sheet for each child.

The reading skill

With picture cards a child says the word, hears its sounds and spells it. With word cards a child reads the word and writes it. Both are the sound-to-letter work that beginners need.

Pictures a child can name

A picture card is a question, so the ready sets use only pictures a young child would name with that word.

At home

Lay the cards around a room and let one child walk from card to card.

Good questions

How many children can play?

As many as there are cards. Each child starts at a different card.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Leave “Answer key page” turned on.

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Where do the pictures come from?

Every picture is one of our own hand-drawn crayon pictures. A picture is used as a question only where a young child would name it with that word.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
