Make a letter of the day page. At the top is the letter drawn as an animal, with the word. Under it your child traces the capital letter and the small letter, with a start dot and an arrow, and writes them on a line. At the bottom is a short word that starts with the sound, with its picture, to read and trace.

Each capital letter is drawn as an animal or a thing that starts with its sound: A is an alligator, B is a bear, S is a snake. The picture gives the letter a hook to hang its sound on. X is a box with an X, because x is heard at the end.
Alligator, elephant and kangaroo are not words a beginner can sound out. Say them together. What matters is the first sound.
