Two-piece matching game maker

Two pieces that belong together, a letter or word on each

Make a two-piece matching game. Each pair is two of our crayon pictures that belong together: a cone and its scoop, a hive and its bee, a pot and its flower. A capital letter is printed on one piece and its small letter on the other. Or match a letter to a word that starts with its sound, or a word to the same word.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose what to match: capital and small letter, letter and word, or word and word.
  2. Pick the letters or the words.
  3. Pick one kind of picture for every pair, or a mix.
  4. Print, cut out the pieces, mix them and match.

The reading skill

Matching a capital to its small letter, or a letter to a word that starts with its sound, is the letter knowledge that reading rests on. Matching a word to the same word is early word recognition.

One kind of picture or a mix

With one kind of picture, such as ten cones, a child has to read the letters to find the match. With a mix, the pictures help: the bee goes with the hive.

Ten kinds of pairs

cones and scoops, pots and flowers, mittens, hives and bees, dog houses and dogs, buns, rockets, cups and saucers, trees, trains.
