Three-part card maker

A whole card, a picture card and a word card

Make three-part cards for matching. Each word gets a whole card with the picture and the word, a picture card, and a word card. Your child lays out the whole cards, then matches the picture and the word to each one. Choose short words to sound out, a picture group, or type your own words.

Your worksheet:

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose a ready word set or a picture group, or type your own words.
  2. Choose three or four sets on a page.
  3. Print. Cut on the dashed lines. Keep each big card whole and cut the small card into a picture and a word.
  4. Lay out the big cards. Match each picture, then each word.

The reading skill

Matching a word card to a whole card makes a child look at every letter of the word. With the short word sets, the child can sound the word out and check it against the picture.

How the three parts work

The whole card is the answer. Your child matches the picture, then finds the word that looks the same, then reads it. Later, take the whole cards away and match word to picture alone.

Words a grown-up reads first

The picture groups, such as animals and food, have words like elephant that a beginner cannot sound out yet. Read those cards together first. The short word sets can be sounded out.
