Sound box mat maker

Say it slowly, push a counter for each sound

Make sound box mats, also called Elkonin boxes. Each mat has a picture and a row of empty boxes, one for each sound in its name. Your child says the word slowly and pushes a counter into a box for each sound: c, a, t. Blank mats with two to five boxes work for any word you say.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose mats with a picture, or blank mats.
  2. For picture mats, pick a word set or choose “Type your own words”.
  3. Choose how many mats go on a page, and if there is a line to write the word.
  4. Print. Use counters, buttons or coins to push into the boxes.

The reading skill

Hearing the separate sounds in a spoken word is the skill under both reading and spelling. The boxes make each sound something a child can touch and count.

A box for each sound, not each letter

The word ship gets three boxes, because sh is one sound. The maker only uses words whose sounds can be counted for sure from their letters.

Pictures a child can name

The picture is the question, so only pictures a young child would name with that word are used.

Good questions

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Why was a word I typed left out?

A picture mat needs a picture a child can name, and a word with one short vowel so its sounds can be counted. Other words are left out and the page says which. Use a blank mat for those.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Turn on “Answer key page” to get each word split into its sounds.

How do I make it last?

Laminate the page or slip it into a page protector. Then it can be wiped clean and used again.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
