Word building mat maker

A picture, empty boxes and letter tiles to cut out

Make a word building mat. Each row has a picture or a word and a row of empty boxes. At the bottom is a strip of letter tiles to cut out. Your child says the word, then builds it one sound at a time.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a word set, or choose “Type your own words” and type them.
  2. Choose what is on the left: a picture, the word, or both.
  3. Choose one box for each letter, or one box for each sound.
  4. Print. Cut off the tile strip and cut the tiles apart. Magnet letters work too.

The reading skill

Building a word is spelling it by sound: say the word slowly, listen for each sound, and find its letter. It is the other side of sounding out, and each one helps the other.

Picture or word?

With a picture alone, your child has to hear every sound without seeing the word. That is the harder job. With the word shown, it is a copy-and-build job for a child who is just starting.

One box for each sound

In a word such as ship or duck, two letters make one sound. Choose one box for each sound and those letters share a box and a tile.

Good questions

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list. A word that has a picture in our library shows it; the others are printed as words.

Do I have to cut out the tiles?

No. Turn the tile strip off and use magnet letters, letter cards, or a pencil.

Why is a word printed where I asked for a picture?

A picture is only used alone when a child would name it with that word. For the other words the word itself is printed.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
