Snap cube letter mat maker

Cover the colored squares with cubes

Make cube letter mats. Each capital letter is drawn on a square grid, five wide and seven tall. Your child puts one linking cube on each colored square to build the letter, then says its sound and reads the word under it.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Type the letters you want, or choose A to Z.
  2. Choose one, two or four letters on a page.
  3. Choose color or black and white, and a design.
  4. Print. You need linking cubes or any small blocks.

The reading skill

Knowing each letter by sight, with its sound, is the first step of reading. Covering the squares one by one keeps the eyes on the shape of the letter. Under the letter is its capital and small form, a picture that starts with its sound, and the word to read together.

Hands busy, eyes on the letter

Small hand work keeps a young child with one letter for several minutes. Say the sound of the letter together while the hands are busy, and again at the end.

Made of plain shapes

The letter is drawn with plain squares, circles and our own letter strokes. Nothing on the page needs a special set: use what you have at home.
