Rhyme card maker

Short rhymes a beginner can read alone

Make rhyme cards for circle time. These are ten short rhymes of our own, not the old nursery rhymes: every word is one a beginner can sound out or a first sight word, so your child can read the card and not only say it by heart. Pick short words, blends or long vowels.

  4. Print. To keep a copy, choose “Save as PDF” as the printer.

The reading skill

Hearing which words rhyme is one of the first reading skills. On these cards the rhyming words can also be read, because every word was checked against our word lists for that level.

What is ready

Rhymes with short words (cat, hen, pup). Rhymes with blends and sh, ch, th. Rhymes with long vowels.

Good questions

Why not the traditional nursery rhymes?

Their words are too hard for a beginner to read (“twinkle”, “diamond”). These rhymes use only checked words, so the card is real reading.

Can I type my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” and type one on each line. A word that has one of our pictures gets its picture. What you type stays on your device.

Where do the pictures come from?

Every picture is one of our own hand-drawn crayon pictures.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
