Picture word bank maker

Small pictures with the word under each

Make a word bank for the writing table. Each box has one of our hand-drawn pictures and its word, so a child can find the picture and copy the spelling. Type your own words, pick a checked word set, or pick a topic such as animals or food.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose “Type your own words”, a ready word set, or a topic.
  2. Choose 12, 16 or 20 words on a page.
  3. Change the title if you like, for example “Animal Words”.
  4. Print and keep the page in a writing folder.

The reading and writing skill

A word bank lets a child write a word that is too hard to spell alone. Finding the word again and again also helps the child read it by sight later.

Topic pages are for copying

Topic words such as elephant are not words a beginner can sound out. The picture tells the child which word it is. A grown-up can read the page with the child first.

Your own words

A typed word with one of our pictures shows it. A word with no picture gets a clean box with the word alone.

Good questions

Which topics are there?

Animals, food, things to wear, things that go, things at home, my body and outside.

What happens to a word with no picture?

It is printed alone in its box, in big letters.

Where do the pictures come from?

Every picture is one of our own hand-drawn crayon pictures. A picture is used only where a young child would name it with that word.

Can I print in black and white?

Yes. Choose “Black and white” under “Print in”. Every picture becomes a line drawing your child can color in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
