File folder game maker

A matching game that lives in a folder

Make a file folder game. Two board pages, with six pictures each, go inside a folder. A third page holds the pieces: the word for each picture, or its first letter. Your child says the word for a picture, finds its piece and lays it in the box underneath.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a word set or type your own words.
  2. Choose word pieces or first letter pieces.
  3. Print. Glue the two boards inside a file folder.
  4. Cut out the pieces and keep them in a small bag.

The reading skill

With word pieces your child reads a word and matches it to its picture. With first letter pieces your child hears the first sound of the picture and finds its letter.

Make it last

Laminate the folder and the pieces, and add small dots of hook and loop tape so the pieces stay in place.

Pictures a child can name

The ready sets use only pictures a young child would name with that word.

Good questions

How many pictures are there?

Twelve: six on each board.

Can two pieces be the same?

With first letters, yes: two pictures may start with the same letter, and either piece fits.

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Choose “Type your own words” at the top of the word list and type them. What you type stays on your device.

Where do the pictures come from?

Every picture is one of our own hand-drawn crayon pictures. A picture is used as a question only where a young child would name it with that word.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
