Make a quick reading check-up. Your child gets a clean page of letters or words in large print. You get a record sheet with a box for each one and room for three check-up days. Check letter names, letter sounds, or the words of any list.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose small letters, capital letters or words.
  2. For letters, choose names or sounds. For words, pick a list or type your own.
  3. Print both pages. Your child reads from the first page.
  4. Mark the record sheet. Check again in a few weeks and compare.

The reading skill

A check-up shows which letters and words are known right away and which still need work, so practice time goes where it is needed.

Mixed order on purpose

Letters are mixed up, so a child cannot lean on the alphabet song. You can switch back to ABC order.

Not a test to study for

Keep it short and friendly. Stop if your child gets tired. The sheet is a record for you, not a grade.
