R controlled vowels worksheets

ar, or, er, ir and ur: the bossy r changes the vowel

Make an r controlled vowels worksheet. When a vowel comes before an r, the r changes its sound: ar in car, or in fork, and er, ir and ur, which all say the same sound in fern, bird and nurse. Your child circles the vowel and r in each word, writes each word under its pair, or colors the words by sound.

Why it is called bossy r

In car the a does not say its short sound, and in fork the o does not either. The r takes over the vowel. Many teachers call it bossy r, and children remember it that way.

One sound, three spellings

er, ir and ur all say the same sound, as in her, bird and turn. Reading them is easy once the sound is known. Spelling them takes longer, so practice one pair at a time.

When to start

R controlled vowels come after short vowels and words with a silent e. If words like cake and bike are still slow, stay with those a little longer.
