Word cards, an e wand and a practice page
Make a magic e set, also called silent e or quiet e. The word cards show a short word with an empty box at the end: cap, kit, hop. Your child puts the e of the paper wand in the box and reads the new word: cape, kite, hope. A practice page has the same pairs to read, trace and write.

A quiet e at the end of a short word changes the vowel from its short sound to its name: a in cap, a in cape. Seeing the same word with and without the e makes the rule clear.
