Double the f, l, s or z after a short vowel
Make a floss rule worksheet. The floss rule is a spelling rule: in a short word with a short vowel, an f, l, s or z at the end is written twice, as in puff, bell, dress and buzz. The word floss itself follows the rule. Your child circles the double letters, writes each word under its ending, or colors the words by ending.
Your worksheet:
f, l, s: the letters of floss. Many teachers add z, as in buzz. The rule works for short words with one short vowel.
Some short words break the rule, such as bus, gas, if and pal. They are left out of these pages, so every word follows the rule.
ff as in puff, ll as in bell, ss as in dress and zz as in buzz.
After short vowel words like cat and pig are easy to read and spell.
