CVC spelling worksheet maker

A picture, a box for each sound, a line for the word

Make CVC spelling worksheets. Each row has a picture, a box for each sound and a writing line. Your child says the word, writes one sound in each box, then writes the whole word on the line. Pick a short vowel set, a word family or blends, or type your own words.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a ready word set, or type your own words that have a picture.
  2. Leave the sound boxes on, and print the first sound if your child needs a start.
  3. Choose four, five or six words on a page.
  4. Print. Say each word together before your child writes it.

The reading skill

Spelling a short word sound by sound is the other side of reading it. One box for each sound shows a child how many sounds to listen for. Two letters that make one sound, such as sh, share a box.

Words that can be sounded out

The ready sets are our checked word lists, where every letter says its usual sound. A picture is used only when a young child would name it with that word.

Make it easier

Turn on the word bank, or print the first sound in its box.
