How to make your worksheet

  1. Open the addition and subtraction maker and choose numbers within 5, 10 or 20.
  2. Turn on the number line as the help shown on the page, instead of pictures or ten frames.
  3. Print the page along with the answer key for checking work after your child finishes.
  4. Show your child how to start at the first number and hop forward along the line.

Using the number line together

Point to the first number on the line with your child. Then count the hops out loud as you move to the right for addition. Let your child use a finger to touch each number while counting, since this keeps the counting steady. The same number line works for subtraction too, by hopping to the left instead.

Easier or harder number lines

For an easier page, keep numbers within 5 and use pictures along with the number line for extra support. For more challenge, choose numbers within 20 and take away the pictures, so your child relies on the line alone. You can also mix addition and subtraction problems on one page once your child is steady with both.

What to practice next

Once your child counts forward along the line with ease, try the same maker with ten frames instead. This builds a different way of seeing the same numbers. Mixing addition and subtraction pages on one sheet keeps practice varied once your child knows both. Our other free kindergarten worksheets cover number words and early counting too.

Good questions

How to teach a number line?

Teaching a number line works well when you show your child that each hop moves one whole number, not a half step. Start with small jumps between close numbers before moving to bigger jumps.

How to use number line for addition?

Using a number line for addition means your child starts at the first number. Then the child hops forward the same number of spaces as the second number. The spot where the hops end is the answer.

How to teach number line addition?

Teaching number line addition is easiest when you first show a few hops with small numbers. Say each number aloud as your child points to it. Once that feels familiar, let your child try the hops alone while you watch.
