Feed the box sorting game maker

Read the card, post it in the right box

Make a posting game. Each box front has a big label and a slot to cut out. Tape it to a tissue box or a shoe box. Your child reads a word card, or names a picture, and posts it through the slot of the box it belongs to. The fronts are plain shapes, so they suit any age.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Choose two word families, two first sounds, or type your own groups.
  2. Print the box fronts and the cards.
  3. Cut out each slot and tape the front to a box.
  4. Your child reads each card out loud and posts it.

The reading skill

With word families your child reads each word and hears its ending. With first sounds your child names the picture and listens for how it starts. Both are sorting by sound, which is the base of phonics.

Check together

Open the boxes at the end and read the cards in each one. The answer key lists what belongs where.

Your own groups

Type one group on each line: the label, a colon, then the words. For example “sh: ship shop shed”.
