Dictation page maker

You say the word, your child writes it

Make a dictation page. Your child gets numbered rows with a box for each sound and a writing line. You get a script page with the words and a sentence to read out. The words come from our checked word sets, so every one can be spelled by its sounds, or you can type your own.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Pick a ready word set, or type your own words.
  2. Choose how many words and how many sentences.
  3. Print both pages. Keep the script page for yourself.
  4. Say each word. Your child says it, taps the sounds and writes it.

The reading skill

Dictation is reading turned around. To write a word a child hears, they have to pull it apart into sounds and match each sound to a letter.

How to give dictation

Say the word. Your child repeats it, taps one finger for each sound, writes a sound in each box, then writes the whole word. Check together at the end.

One box for each sound

Letter teams such as sh and ck get one box, because they are one sound. Turn the boxes off for a child who no longer needs them.
