A few letters, many words

Print a making words page. Type a few letters, such as s a t p i n. The page prints them as tiles to cut out, with ten lines to write on. Your child moves the tiles to make as many words as possible and writes each one. The answer key lists the words that can be made.

How to make your worksheet

  1. Type three to ten letters, with one vowel or more.
  2. Print, with the answer key for yourself.
  3. Cut out the letter tiles.
  4. Make a word, read it, write it. Then change a letter and make another.

The reading skill

Building words from loose letters is spelling and reading in one: a child chooses a letter for each sound, then reads back what was built.

A checked word list

The answer key lists only two and three letter words from our checked short-vowel lists. Your child may find other real words too. That is fine.

A good first set

s a t p i n makes more than twenty words, which is why many reading programs start with those letters.

Good questions

Can a letter be used twice?

Only if you type it twice. Type d a d to allow “dad”.

Why are some words not on the list?

Is it free?
