The reading skill

A digraph is two letters that make one sound: sh in ship, ch in chip, th in bath, ck in sock. A child has to see the two letters as one piece to read these words.

Four kinds of page

Circling pictures trains the ear. Writing the missing letters and sorting words train the eye. Read and match checks that the word was really read.

Checked words only

Every word is from our checked digraph lists, so the digraph says its usual sound in it.

Good questions

Why is there no ph?

Our checked word lists have no ph words yet, so ph is left out for now.

Why is wh only on the sorting page?

A picture page needs two or more wh pictures. We have one so far, a whisk.

Where do the words come from?

From our checked word lists for each pattern. A picture is used only when a young child would name it with that word.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Leave “Answer key page” on and it prints as the last page.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit.
