How to make your worksheet

  1. Open the addition and subtraction worksheet generator and set the number range to within 10.
  2. Choose a number line for help on the page, so your child can count hops.
  3. Print the sheet and have your child draw jumps on the number line to find each sum.
  4. Use the answer key to check the work together, then make a new sheet for more practice.

Using the number line at home

Sit next to your child while they use the number line. Point to the starting number, then count each hop out loud together. For 4 + 3, that sounds like four, five, six, seven. Let your child draw the hops themselves rather than just looking at the numbers. Saying each number as they jump can help tie counting to adding. This is better than just copying answers from somewhere else.

Make it easier or harder

If the number line feels hard, switch the range to within 5. That gives fewer hops to draw for each problem. If your child finds this easy, change the range to within 20 for bigger jumps. You can also turn on pictures or a ten frame instead of the number line. This gives a different kind of support for the same addition facts.

What to try next

Once your child adds well on the number line, try a mixed sheet with the subtraction sign too. The worksheet generator lets you choose a mix of addition and subtraction problems, still within 10. You could also switch the help shown on the page to a ten frame. This lets your child practice the same facts in a different way.
